Echoic Long-Term Memory

It is the second week into our adventure.  When I am lying in bed and my eyes are closed , I picture the snow swirling around outside as the wind whips against the house.  I can picture the cold that will be nipping my nose and the excitement of that first crunch of my feet as they climb through the snow.  I can already taste the hot chocolate that completes a day of working and playing in the snowy New England winter weather.

I open my eyes, the window is open and there is a cool breeze blowing in.  It is summer in El Tabo, Chile.  The ocean waves are non-stop.  They crash against the rocks, one after the other, after the other.  I look beyond the waves and can see only opportunity.  I know that out there is a world of new experiences… starfish, sea urchins, cochayuyo…Rapa Nui, Australia, India….

The difference between the familiar sound of the snowstorm and the never-ending sound of the crashing waves is that one of them comes to an end.

At the end of our ten days in El Tabo, the background sound of the waves crashing was no longer noticeable.  As we traveled to our next destination further inland and south, I wondered if I would miss the noise.
